The Fire and Police Benefit Motocross was inspired by The Fire and Police Motocross Nationals (FPMN). Ed Wilson, a Los Angeles County firefighter, conceived the FPMN. Ed formed the FPMN to bring firefighter and law enforcement officers together for a great sporting event and to have a good time. Ed and his crew decided that they could further help the community by turning the race into a charity event. Ed’s race has grown so much that they now field a West Coast Supercross team!!

After seeing an advertisement for the FPMN, Ray Martin, an Akron, Ohio firefighter, contacted Ed about starting a race in Ohio. Ed offered his advice and support and things got rolling.

In June 1999, a two-day event was organized thanks to the owners of Broken Spokes Raceway, Amy and her father Bob Grewell. They did a lot better than just hold the race: they donated the track and also worked the race! We contacted many motocross related companies and received many donations for raffles and door prizes.

Many of the racers told Ray that this was the most fun that they ever had racing and asked him to make it an annual event. Now, many of the racers state that as they are driving home from the race they are already planning the next year’s trip. Many strong friendships have been made at this event. That’s what this is all about, having fun, racing and meeting good people and raising capital for two very good charities! In our fifteen years, we have raised over $74,000.00 through entry fees, raffles and donations. The proceeds have been shared between The Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Burn Unit of Children’s Hospital Medical Center Of Akron, Ohio.

We would not have been nearly this successful with out the support of our many great sponsors, including the track owners. We have raced at Broken Spokes Raceway, Crow Canyon , Scenic Highlands, Beans Bike Park, Spring Valley and the historic Smith Road Raceway. Visit our sponsor page to link to the many great companies that support us in our efforts. Also remember to support those that support us!

The Fire & Police Benefit Motocross is a family oriented event. Spouses and children of FPBMX members are more than welcome to come and join in the racing. We offer race classes for all of the kids and also a women’s class. There is camping available at the track. The Fire and Police Motocross Nationals have held races since 1989. All of us with The Fire and Police Benefit Motocross hope to have the same success and longevity as our brothers in California.
